Last weekend, the 2015 edition of SunshinePHP conference took place in the sunny Miami, Florida. Two days of awesome talks and great socials, in a most formidable venue. This is a quick wrap-up post about my experience.
I'd like to start by giving a BIG kudos to Adam Culp for the effort on promoting diversity and making sure we have a safe environment for everybody - the code of conduct was prominently mentioned not only in the communication emails for attendees and speakers, but also in the opening notes. From the 36 selected speakers, 11 were female - 30% is a great number comparing to other PHP conferences I've been to. I could also see a lot of female faces in the audience.
The conference started for me with the speakers dinner - in a boat! We had a great time, with a fantastic Miami view from the water - big thanks to PluralSight for sponsoring this!
The conference had so many great talks that it was very hard to choose which track to go. The "hallway track" was also a plus one, meeting old and new friends. Having our very own Miami Vice stars helped a lot with that!
The Friday night social was a success. DigitalOcean sponsored drinks and food, and... helium balloons. You know what happens when a bunch of nerds get hold of helium balloons after a few drinks, right? THIS happens:
Some other highlights for me:
- Launching of Cal Evan's "secret" project Wisdom of the Elephpant, which I had the pleasure to participate
- Meeting people IRL: the community guy Khayrattee (7php) and amazing Eryn - loved her keynote, this girl kills on stage!
- Talks: all keynotes but specially Cal Evan's one were he talks about the PHP community
- Yellow elephpants!
- Post-conference tour in Miami with Michelle, Lorna, Eryn and Khayrattee thanks to Adrian
speakers: vice it up!
On a last note, if you were at SunshinePHP, please take a time to give feedback on the talks you watched and also on the event itself - it's all on Joind.in. This is important for speakers and organizers in order to improve.
Thanks all organizers for putting together such a great event, and all attendees for being part of it. I hope to see you again next year!
