Vagrant 1.5 was released in March, bringing great new features and a lot of improvements. This post gives you a quick overview on what's new.
Vagrant Cloud and Vagrant Share
The first and most important new feature on Vagrant 1.5 is the Vagrant Cloud. Now, we have a central and official place to share and discover Vagrant boxes. But the Vagrant Cloud is not only about boxes - it also made another great new feature possible: Vagrant Share.
With Vagrant Share, you can share your virtual environment with anyone in the world, and to access the web server running in your VM they don't even need to have Vagrant installed. This is a great way for showing your work to clients, coworkers, or just to ask a friend's opinion about that website you are working on.
Check this video I recorded, talking about these two great new features on Vagrant 1.5 and including some protips to avoid unauthorized access to your VM when using Vagrant Share:
RSync and SMB: new shared folder types
Now, Windows users can also benefit from more performance on the Shared Folders, something that was not possible before with NFS - since it's not supported on Windows hosts. Vagrant 1.5 comes with two new types of shared folders: RSync (for all platforms) and SMB (only for Windows users).
If you have an application that makes too much writing operations inside the Shared Folders, RSync will help you to obtain a better application performance, since the files are not automatically synced all the time as with NFS.
